BODMAS
Rule
BODMAS tells us the order in which we solve mathematical expressions.
B
Brackets
Solve the expressions inside brackets first.
( )
O
Orders
Then solve powers or roots.
x² √x
D
Division ➗
Then do division (from left to right).
M
Multiplication ✖️
Then do multiplication (from left to right).
A
Addition ➕
Then do addition (from left to right).
S
Subtraction ➖
Finally do subtraction (from left to right).
EXAMPLE
18 − [ 6 ÷ (2 + 1) ] × 2 + 4²
Step 1 (Brackets)
18 − [ 6 ÷ 3 ] × 2 + 4² (2+1=3)
Step 2 (Orders)
18 − [ 6 ÷ 3 ] × 2 + 16 (4²=16)
Step 3 (Division)
18 − [ 2 ] × 2 + 16
Step 4 (Multiplication)
18 − 4 + 16
Step 5 (Addition)
14 + 16
Step 6 (Subtraction)
